Children beginning to read are learning how a book works, where the story starts and ends and what is expected in the middle. Children love to role play stories and read favourite books again and again. With each read more familiar words and letters are recognised. Children are learning that their thoughts and ideas can be written down. They begin to match written words to spoken words and use pictures to help them understand the text. Children use meaning, text structure and visual prompts to work out the words they are reading. Their vocabulary increases and they begin to learn more about different types of texts. Eventually children learn to persevere while reading and develop a range of strategies to decipher unfamiliar words and make meaning from lengthier texts.
What is Reading?
Reading is making meaning from print, which is all around us – books, magazines, posters, advertising, movies and computers. Understanding how children learn to read will help you to provide support at home.
To read successfully, it is important that children know the names of the letters and the relationship between letters and sounds. Children need help to locate letters in texts and the sounds they make in the words while they are reading.
